“I am fascinated by human anatomy, along with the often disconnected relationship between textbook physiology and actual individual experiences and perceptions as our bodies navigate through the world and the process of disease. As an artist, patient, and academic, I have obsessively researched anatomy, pathology, and the history and philosophy of science and medicine—finding myself intrigued by not only the physical composition and mechanisms of our bodies, but also equally captivated by the theories and thought processes behind the historical endeavors that have ultimately informed our modern understanding of the human body. I create intimate and detailed drawings and paintings, composed primarily to emphasize elements of the body’s shrouded interior, rather than the familiar external appearance that’s typically given preference when a person is viewed. Through these works of art I strive to visually represent the perpetual duality of human existence as both physical bodies and as beings with primarily mind-based identities—prompting considerations of not just an increased awareness of the medical technicalities within ourselves, but also demanding recognition of the conscious inhabitiation of our bodies.”
