• Artist Bio.:

Tiana Lewis was born in 1993 and raised in Yountville, California, in the heart of the beautiful Napa Valley. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, Maryland. Required to deal with integrating the complexities of the human body into her life beginning at the age of six, when Tiana first experienced a significant medical challenge, she found art to be the ideal method to learn about anatomy, human physiology, and ultimately herself. People have always been the artist’s preferred subject, and her paintings and drawings demonstrate her interest in human anatomy with a particular focus on the role of disease and perceptions of physical human experiences. Tiana views her artistic abilities as being entirely integrated with the more traditionally academic side of her mind, and embraces the inclusion of art-making as one of the many components innate to her thinking, studying, and learning process. This has proven to be beneficial not only in relation to the study of the human body but also as an approach through which she is able to achieve greater understanding applicable to all topics she encounters. In addition to the creation of her own independent work, Tiana has participated in archaeological projects (chiefly involving research at the ancient site of Lucas Augusti—modern day Lugo, Spain—along with smaller cemetery mapping projects in the United States) creating numerous drawings while simultaneously engaging with another of her favorite topics—history. Additionally, during her time in Baltimore, while briefly studying medieval European manuscript production and the making of books in the Middle Ages, Tiana again utilized this hands-on collaboration between art and academics to increase the depth of her understanding specifically through the creation of her own (abbreviated) reproduction of an illuminated manuscript. Recently, the artist has dedicated the majority of her time serving as a full-time caregiver for a loved one. She plans to continue her education in the near future by pursuing additional formal studies in the history of science and medicine and exploring interests within the field of death care.
